THE JOKE FACTORY · EARLY READERS

Early-reader privacy notice

A free digital book, your honest feedback, and a clear choice about what happens to your information.

Last updated: 12 October 2026

Who is responsible?

Scarlett Kaplan, writing under The Joke Factory name, is responsible for the information she collects for this early-reader programme. Contact: hello@the-joke-factory.com.

What we collect

If you volunteer through our website form, by email, or through a Facebook or Instagram instant form, we receive the details you submit: your first name, email address, answers about reading in English, preferred format and availability, and your choice about future invitations. We also receive the messages and feedback you choose to send, including device or reading-app information when you report a formatting problem.

If we confirm an English paperback shipment, we ask separately for the recipient name and postal address. We use them only to arrange and resolve delivery, sharing the necessary details with the book fulfillment provider and carrier. We delete our shipping-address records within 90 days after delivery or resolution of a delivery issue, unless a legal obligation requires longer retention.

The programme is for adults aged 18 and over. Please do not send sensitive personal information or information about other people.

Why we use it

We use your details to organise the test, send your digital copy and practical instructions, follow up about your participation, and understand your feedback so we can improve the book. Participation is voluntary. The legal basis for these uses is your consent when you request to join the test. We need an email address to send your copy; without it, we cannot arrange participation.

We do not sell your contact details or use them to build advertising audiences. We do not publish your name, feedback or quotations as a testimonial without asking separately. There is no purchase requirement and no obligation to leave a public review.

Future books are a separate choice

Joining this test does not automatically subscribe you to future reading opportunities. We contact you about future books only if you separately opt in. This choice is optional and does not affect access to this test. You can withdraw either consent at any time by emailing us; withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before it.

Who receives your information

Scarlett Kaplan uses the information to manage the programme. Service providers involved in receiving forms, storing the participant list or delivering email may process information to provide those services. Website form answers and delivery status are stored in a private Cloudflare D1 database, accessible to the programme administrator. Cloudflare Email Sending sends the requested EPUB download link automatically. The ebook and temporary download permissions are held in private Cloudflare Workers KV storage. Our contact mailbox uses OVHcloud Zimbra. Earlier manually submitted requests may remain in the previous private Cloudflare KV store until their 90-day expiry. If you join through a Facebook or Instagram form, Meta also processes your submission. Other participants do not receive your contact details.

Website hosting and form storage are provided by Cloudflare under Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy. Facebook and Instagram also process information under Meta’s Privacy Policy. Email handling is described in OVHcloud’s data protection information. Their processing, storage locations and any international transfers are governed by their applicable terms and safeguards; these providers may process information outside your country. You can contact us for details about the services used for your participation.

How long we keep it

For this test, we delete or anonymise our participant records and identifiable feedback within 90 days after the test closes. Feedback that no longer identifies anyone may be kept to improve our books. If you separately opt in to future reading opportunities, we keep that contact record until you unsubscribe or for 12 months after your last active contact, whichever comes first.

We may retain limited records where needed to meet a legal obligation or establish, exercise or defend legal claims, with access restricted to that purpose. Meta and email providers may retain their own records under their policies.

Your choices and rights

You can ask to access, correct or delete your information, withdraw consent, and request restriction or portability where applicable. Email hello@the-joke-factory.com with “Privacy” in the subject line. We may ask for enough information to verify that the request concerns your own records. We aim to respond within one month, subject to applicable rules.

You can also complain to the French data-protection authority, CNIL, or another competent supervisory authority. We do not make decisions about participation with legal or similarly significant effects through solely automated processing.

This page and changes

This privacy page has no signup form, advertising pixel or analytics script added by The Joke Factory. The hosting provider may process technical information needed to serve and secure the website. When you follow a link to another service, that service’s privacy rules apply.

If the programme’s use of information changes materially, we will update this notice and inform affected participants as appropriate before using their details for a new purpose.

Website form: storage and security

The website now collects your first name, email, feedback timing, optional paperback preference and optional future-test consent when you submit the form. Registration is restricted to adults aged 18 or over in the United States. The form does not request a postal address.

Scarlett Kaplan uses these details to review requests, send the beta book and collect private feedback. Public reviews are optional and are not a condition of receiving a copy. No advertising audience is built from this list.

Website form submissions and delivery status are stored in Cloudflare D1 and deleted by a daily cleanup after 90 days from submission. Optional future-test consent does not extend that expiry. Private download links expire after 30 days. Contact and feedback emails are handled through OVHcloud Zimbra under the retention rules above. To withdraw or request deletion, email hello@the-joke-factory.com.

To limit abuse, a one-way digest derived from the connection IP is used for an hourly request limit and removed by a daily cleanup within two days. The form does not store the raw IP address. Cloudflare also processes connection information to operate and secure the site. Submitted answers and email addresses are not written to application logs.

The website automatically emails a private EPUB download link after a valid request. Repeated submissions do not trigger additional messages. If delivery cannot be confirmed, Scarlett reviews the request. A paperback is offered only if availability is confirmed separately; a delivery address is requested only then.
